Travel Notes: Hong
Kong's Floating Restaurants
Hong Kong is a gastronomical
delight. There are restaurants catering to any
palate. I found that the adventure begins even
before you see the menu consisting of such
delicacies as chicken feet, sea urchin and squid.
It began for us as soon as we took a ride to the
restaurant.
Since the restaurant is on water,
you will need to ride either a ferry or a "sampan"
(Chinese junk) to get to it. These water taxis are
really homes for the people who use them to earn
money ferrying passengers to the floating
restaurants. Our transportation of choice was the
"sampan". As soon as we boarded the Chinese version
of a houseboat, the aroma of the family's meal
cooking over fire made me hungry. The woman who was
piloting our ride to food heaven was muttering in
Chinese to her young daughter who obediently went
to rock the baby in his basket.
Anchored right on Hong Kong's
"Fragrant Harbor" is Jumbo Restaurant, a floating
restaurant aptly called because it is considered
the world's largest restaurant. Although the food
itself is not all that good by Hong Kong standards,
the experience is well worth the visit.
Once you reach the restaurant, you
can select your fresh catch still swimming in giant
aquariums. The attendant will scoop up your choice
with a net and promptly cook it to your
specifications.
After the meal, we walked around to
catch a glimpse of the Hong Kong skyline which is
breathtaking by day or night.
The floating restaurants of Hong
Kong...a must to experience while in Hong
Kong.
